This week was Neurodiversity Celebration Week at Zane North and across our district. Staff and students engaged in conversations and activities, and conducted read alouds to explain neurodiversity and increase awareness and knowledge about brain differences. We emphasized sharing information about different neurotypes (such as Autism, ADHD, and Dyslexia) in a strengths-based, inclusive way.

During Neurodiversity Celebration Week, students learned that neurodiversity is an umbrella term, used to refer to different ways of thinking. To reinforce this point, students got together to decorate their own umbrellas that highlighted various neurodifferences (such as Dyslexia, ADHD, Autism, Tourette Syndrome), and individual student umbrellas were combined to make larger umbrella displays, to emphasize our unity as a school community in valuing all kinds of different minds.

As part of Neurodiversity Celebration Week, we gathered together to plant some flowers. Each student in the school had an opportunity to plant a flower in a seed starting greenhouse kit, choosing from a dozen different kinds of flower seeds. The different kinds of flowers were meant to represent various neurotypes and differences we have as individual learners. And planting them together was a demonstration of our unity as a school community to celebrate, value, and respect our neurodiversity.

Thank you to the Zane North community for your amazing support of our Read-A-Thon. Collectively our students read more than 63,000 minutes, and through many generous donations, $15,000 was raised to support school activities! Pictured below are our 3rd graders, who lead all classes with 12,175 minutes read.
